So before I posted the nastiness about Gary Vaynerchuk, I did some looking into what people like about him. Basically, he's become a success in an arena that a lot of people think they can as well. Web 2.0 is also predicated on the idea that the Internet is now "smart" enough to track an audience and therefor, any web site can be successful if you build enough of an audience and get people to sign up.
For people who have studied media trends, it's so easy to see that this is not the case. There is a lot of money to be made off of people trying to accomplish their own ideas. The media pie has not grown larger, it has just started to fracture into more slices. So the audience you're chasing is also being chased by a million other guys with the same resources.
So you want your blog/site to be an Internet success? Go for it. You'll have a celebrity lifespan of 15 minutes for your one idea and then you'll fade away. However, if you continue to produce content that is interesting, relevant, and creative, you'll have a slightly longer lifespan, but as many television writers have discovered, creating content at that pace is draining and repetitive.
So what did Gary Vaynerchuk "discover" that he believes will help him weather the storm? He thinks that selling his personality, he'll be relevant all the longer. Hmmm...
